The darling mispronunciations of childhood!--dear me, there's no music that can touch it; and how one grieves when it wastes away and dissolves into correctness, knowing it will never visit his bereaved ear again.

Leka 6, a President's Day discussion

Leka (looking at a piece of wall decor): Does that say 'Kingdom of Tonga?'
Me: Yep, good reading!
Leka: Tonga has a king?
Me: They do.
Leka: But who's our king?
Me: America doesn't have a king--free countries don't have kings.
Leka: Tonga's not a Free Country?! (Mind boggled)...But Daddy lived in Tonga...how did he live there..

So, maybe I shouldn't have thrown in that last bit (even though to become a free country the USA overthrew the oppressive monarchy we were under)...I wasn't trying to demean the island nation of her nationality--I know they are a constitutional monarchy & Nase says the people do have some representation.

So Leka asked her dad if Tonga is a free country..
He tells her "Tonga is a free country...owned by a king."
Good enough :)
(And at least Leka understands the basic principle that it's a better life in a free country :)

God Bless the USA!

(Tonga sounds like an Ok place, too :)
